Effie Eitam: A Life Dedicated to Israel

Effie Eitam is an Israeli War Hero, a devout Jew and an unabashed supporter of the right of the Jewish people to their own homeland. He is a former leader of the National Religious Party and more recently the Ahi party, which became a part of Likud in 2009.

He has a long and distinguished military record during his thirty years in the IDF, including the famous raid on the Entebbe which freed the hostages held in Uganda by Arab terrorists. In the Yom Kippur war, his act of heroism in preventing Syrian tanks in the Golan from invading Israel earned him the Medal of Distinguished Service.

During Mr. Eitam’s time in the Knesset he served on various committees and lobbies including Foreign Affairs, Defense, Internal Affairs, Internal Security, Environment, the Lobby for Closing the Social Gaps and the Jerusalem Lobby.

He was also appointed to the Cabinet during several different administrations, serving as Minister of National Infrastructure, during which he promoted the environmentally significant National Gas Project, and as Minister of Housing and Construction where he initiated funding for young couples, discharged soldiers and families of limited income.

Mr. Eitam graduated with honors from the College of National Security and Strategy in London and is currently working on his MA from the University of Haifa. His interests and work span a wide variety of topics: education, citizenship, security, defense, policies, government and legislation, military service, the economy, family and society, to name a few. Eitam and his wife, Ilit, live on a Moshav in the Golan Heights. He is the father of eight, grandfather of three.

Mr. Eitam states, “The Jewish nation has one state in the entire world." He has worked his entire life to protect and preserve its integrity, security, values and culture. He enthusiastically professes “I am proud of the fact that during my lifetime I have personally experienced all levels of Israeli society…I believe that the most wonderful thing about the State of Israel is the social fusion, the many shades that make up our society.”

He has been active in preserving the environment, promoting the production of electricity

by natural gas, building desalinization plants and the cleaning of polluting sites. He presents a refreshingly different and candid insight into the problems and opportunities facing Israel.

He is coming to the University at Buffalo to speak to students and the community on Monday, November 2, at 7:30 PM, at Pistachios restaurant on the second floor of the UB Student Union. Hors d'oeuvres will be served. The community is invited to attend this free event sponsored by the Jewish National Fund, which plants trees in Israel and works to reclaim the land, and Hillel of Buffalo.
